Title:

''The Sensor Data Deluge: Opportunities and Pitfalls of Smart Sensing Technologies''

Abstract:

Sensors have become ubiquitous in our lives. They are embedded in mobile phones, wearable devices, cars, roads, and buildings. This abundance of sensing devices has given rise to an increasing “quantification” of many aspects of daily life, including the attempt to model and predict both collective and individual human behavior. While behavior prediction has the potential to improve many aspects of human life and to foster economic growth, one must not forget that any technology is also prone to failures or even misuse. In this talk, I will give examples of how smart sensing technologies are becoming ubiquitous in our life, and will discuss both the opportunities and pitfalls of collecting and using sensor data.

Bio:

Silvia Santini is an Associate Professor at the Faculty of Informatics of the Università della Svizzera Italiana (USI) in Lugano, Switzerland. Before moving to Lugano, she held positions at TU Dresden (Associate Professor), TU Darmstadt (Assistant Professor), and ETH Zurich (Senior Researcher).

Silvia’s research interests lie in the fields of mobile computing and low-power networking. She works or has worked in particular on: network protocols and performance monitoring of low-power, multihop networks; mobile sensor and actuator systems; analysis of large sensor data sets (digital footprint analysis/reality mining); applications, including environmental monitoring, smart energy services, factory and home automation, quantified self.

Silvia has served as the Program Committee member of several renowned conferences, including UbiComp, MobiSys, SenSys, IPSN, INFOCOM, and more. She is currently an Editor of the Proceedings of the ACM on Interactive, Mobile, Wearable and Ubiquitous Technologies (IMWUT) and the General Chair of the 6th D-A-CH+ Conference on Energy Informatics.

Silvia is married and mother of one daughter and soon-to-be mother of a baby boy.
