Abstract
For decades, the software architecture of database systems was static. In the past decade, however, the hardware landscape changed dramatically, and traditional database systems become inefficient on modern hardware. In particular, large main memory capacities and highly-parallel multi-core processors require new data management techniques. As a reaction, main-memory database systems, which re-engineer virtually all database layers, were developed. The talk will first presents a number of techniques for high-performance in-memory data management. Then, we discuss the implications of modern storage technologies.
Bio
Viktor Leis is a professor of databases and information systems group at Friedrich Schiller University Jena. Prior to that, he was a PhD student and a Postdoc at the database systems group at TU Munich. His research revolves around designing efficient database systems and includes core database topics such as query processing, query optimization, transaction processing, index structures, and storage.
