Abstract
Internet Exchange Points (IXPs) have become a significant part of the Internet's infrastructure. They transport multiple Tbps of network traffic between a large number of networks, thus acting as traffic hubs for the delivery of all kinds of content. DE-CIX is one of the world's largest IXPs by traffic volume and connected networks. This lecture starts with a basic Internet and IXP 101 covering the Internet's topology, the basic business models of interconnection, the role of IXPs in the Internet ecosystem and their role as critical infrastructure. We exemplify IXP operations by discussing the architecture of DE-CIX on different layers of the networking stack. Finally, we cover current research topics in the area of Distributed Denial of Service (DDoS) mitigation and P4 in the IXP context.
