Abstrakt
We start with a definition of Internet Exchange Points (IXPs) and provide a 101 on their general architecture and operations, their role in the Internet topology, and their business model. Moreover, we show how IXPs have transformed from small cooperations between a few network providers into critical infrastructure over the last years. After having covered the background, we discuss current research activity with respect to Software Defined Networking (SDN) projects and their relevance to current IXP operations. If time permits, a visual tour of a typical DE-CIX enabled data center and the hardware used can be appended to the talk.
Bio
Matthias Wichtlhuber holds a Diploma in Information Systems from Universität Mannheim and a Ph. D. from Technische Universität Darmstadt. His Ph.
