Abstract
Real-time communication with deterministic (“hard”) delay bounds is a prerequisite for many applications from various domains such as the Industrial IoT (Industry 4.0) or the automotive domain. In particular, so-called Cyber-physical Systems, which control physical processes through a set of distributed networked sensors, actuators, and controllers, benefit from real-time networks. Recently, the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers (IEEE) has defined several standards for so-called Time-sensitive Networks (TSN)---in particular IEEE 802.1Qbv---to integrate deterministic real-time communication into standard IEEE 802.3 networks (“Ethernet”). With these standards, real-time and non-real-time applications can share one converged network rather than relying on individual dedicated networks or mutually incompatible field bus technologies.

Although IEEE defined basic mechanisms enabling real-time communication, e.g., for scheduling the forwarding of frames, the configuration of TSN networks remains a complex task. Therefore, besides introducing the basic mechanisms and standards of TSN, we will present in this talk our work on optimally configuring schedules and routes in TSNs. To this end, we present the concept of Software-defined Time-sensitive Networks, which combine the concepts of Software-defined Networks (SDN) (logically centralized control simplifying routing and now also schedule configuration) and TSN (scheduling for deterministic real-time communication).
