Abstract
By decoupling applications from the constraints of the underlying physical infrastructure, today's virtualized and software-defined networked systems introduce many interesting new opportunities: applications and resources can be allocated in a more flexible, adaptive and programmatic manner.

While these opportunities may be exploited, e.g., to improve resource utilization and fault-tolerance, virtualized and software-defined systems also introduce several new challenges, e.g., in terms of providing a predictable performance or ensuring a correct adaptive operation.

In this talk, I will report on some of the opportunities and challenges in orchestrating and operating modern networked systems. In particular, the talk will provide an overview of four of our research projects:
– How to provide a more predictable performance for cloud applications such as Hadoop?(SIG METRICS 2015)
– How to exploit replica selection to improve tail latency in distributed cloud data stores? (NSDI 2015)
– How to operate more adaptive distributed systems in a consistent manner? (PODC 2015)
– How to incrementally deploy SDN technology? (ATC 2014)

Despite the title, the talk will not require any algorithmic knowledge.
