Abstract
In this talk we will discuss the technical challenges and solutions addressed in the Real-time Application Mobility Platform (TRAMP). Since this is an ongoing project we discuss two solved challenges and two that are subject to ongoing work. The first topic is the question of how to manage open (TCP) connections during migration in an application transparent way and fulfill typical performance requirements of multimedia applications. Another important topic is the communication among the threads that form together an application. The application developer should not care whether these threads are executing on the same device or not. To achieve this location transparent data sharing we have designed a latency optimized overlay. The performance evaluation demonstrates that the overlay satisfies all standard multimedia performance requirements. Security concerns have always been an important consideration resp. problem for process migration. The design and implementation of device communities enables us to migrate threads among trusted devices that are organized with minimal configuration effort into communities. Finally, we take a closer look at content and encoding related issues. Threads handling a particular media type, e.g., video, might migrate between devices. As a consequence the need might arise to adapt the media stream to the new device.
To address this issue in an open and extensible fashion we currently implement a framework for automatic intra- and inter-media adaptation according to the user preferences and the user and thread context.
