Abstract
Process Migration has been subject to many years of research. One fundamental problem that for process migration in Wide Area Networks is the handling of open TCP connections during migration. As such todays’ success of process migration is restricted to Local Area Networks, like in data centers for work load balancing. However, Future Internet projects have introduced new concepts, like the Information Dispatch Point (IDP) in ANA (Autonomic Networking Architecture) which motivated us to take a fresh look at a new approach and application for process migration. The result is a focused research activity called TRAMP towards multi-threaded multimedia applications in which any of the threads might migrate to any trusted device. The application domain is multimedia in pervasive environments in which a user is surrounded by many devices. The collection of devices in proximity of the user can dynamically change (e.g. from living room at home to commuting on the train and in the office). The idea is that the different threads can dynamically migrate to the best suited devices to increase the overall Quality-of-Experience depending on the users preferences and context. We will give in this talk an introduction into process migration, identify the opportunities of IDPs, the vision of TRAMP, a requirements analysis, and a high level overview on the system architecture.
